Cheonan Samgeori

Artist: Unknown (Folk Oral)

Area

Cheonan, Chungnam

Type

Gyeonggi Folk

Role

Amusement

Cheonan Samgeori is a folk song that originated from the local melodies of Chungcheong Province and was later refined by Gyeonggi singers. Because the rhythmic exclamation 'Heung' is woven into every verse, it is also known as Heung-taryeong. This record is an archive collection compiled to preserve and organize the lyrics and transmission of Cheonan Samgeori.

Details & Notes

Samgeori: Refers to the intersection of the Samnamdaero road where the path from Seoul branched off toward Gyeongsang and Jeolla provinces.
Weeping Willow: Known as 'Neungsu-beodeul,' these trees are linked to the legend of Neungso, a maiden from Cheonan Samgeori stories.
The rhythm is Gutgeori, and it is entirely distinct from the Namdo folk song titled 'Heung-taryeong' despite sharing the same name.

Cultural Context

Cheonan Samgeori was a crossroad where weary travelers and merchants rested. Despite its upbeat rhythm, the lyrics often reflect the transience of life. Today, Cheonan City maintains this vibrant spirit by hosting the Heungtaryeong Dance Festival annually since 2003.

Lyrics

천안 삼거리 흥
능수야 버들은 흥
제멋에 겨워서 흥
축 늘어졌구나 흥
에루화 좋구나 흥
성화가 났구나 흥

At the Cheonan crossroads, heung
The weeping willows, heung
Lost in their own delight, heung
Hang drooping low, heung
Eruhwa, how fine, heung
What a stir it's caused, heung
